About the agency: Community-based Task Force on Poverty identified the need in 1999. The Salvation Army submitted a proposal and RFP to operate the program. Research was done through the University of Ottawa. Data collection for all Eviction Prevention Programs were compiled through them for two years.
Eligibility Criteria:
- be a family unit with children
- be in imminent danger of losing their housing through rental arrears or face disconnection of essential utility
- be living in housing that is permanent and habitable not owe more than two months of rental arrears, or not need more than three months of utility arrears or other needs
- have not used HomeSafe previously
- not be involved in chronic financial mismanagement
- have the ability to repay the loan in a timely manner (sometimes waived)
- have exhausted other social services and community resources
Rent Bank loans are provided for: Rental arrears, Utilities, Tribunal fees
Accepting applications from: Social assistance recipients, Self-employed individuals, Refugee claimant (Must meet criteria)
Maximum loan provided: No maximum, but if arrears are over $1,500, they seek out alternatives or partner with social services.
